Guilty Plea in Violent Attack on Orthodox Jewish Community in Ocean County

LAKEWOOD, New Jersey – A man from Ocean County has pleaded guilty to hate crimes after a violent attack on members of the Orthodox Jewish community in and around Lakewood. Dion Marsh was accused of attempting to harm five Jewish individuals in 2022, allegedly running over four people in a stolen vehicle and stabbing one of them in the chest.

“The threat from hate-fueled violence is a sad reality across our state and our nation. That hate is not who we are. We are stronger as a people because no matter what you look like, how you worship, where you come from, or who you love, your civil rights must be respected and protected,” U.S. Attorney Philip Sellinger stated.

Marsh’s sentencing has been set for June 11, 2024. The case highlights the ongoing issue of hate crimes and violence targeting specific communities, emphasizing the importance of protecting the civil rights of all individuals regardless of their backgrounds, beliefs, or identities. Such incidents serve as a reminder of the need for ongoing efforts to combat and prevent hate-fueled violence.
