Government Task Force Formed to Combat Malicious Campaign Discrediting State, Traces Perpetrators of Alleged Deaths

Islamabad, Pakistan – The government of Pakistan has taken a significant step by establishing a Joint Task Force (JTF) to address a targeted disinformation campaign aimed at undermining the credibility of the state. This move comes in response to allegations made by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party regarding the deaths of its supporters during a recent protest in Islamabad.

The PTI claimed that at least 12 party supporters lost their lives due to firing by law enforcement agencies during the protest. However, the government has repeatedly denied these allegations, stating that security personnel were deployed without live ammunition.

In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on December 1, it was highlighted that a coordinated effort is underway to discredit the State of Pakistan and its security forces through false and inciting news spread across various domestic and foreign media platforms.

As a result of this malicious campaign, the government has formed the JTF with the purpose of identifying and pursuing individuals and groups involved in spreading fake news and misleading information related to the recent political events in Islamabad. The task force will work to bring these perpetrators to justice within a specified timeframe.

Leading the JTF is PTA Chairman (retired) General Major Hafeezur Rehman, along with eight other members drawn from various government departments and agencies. The task force will also recommend policy measures to address any gaps identified during its investigation.

This initiative follows the government’s previous formation of a separate task force to investigate and take action against those responsible for violence during the PTI’s protest. The government has been actively combating misinformation and propaganda, particularly in the age of social media where false information can spread rapidly.

In light of these developments, it is crucial for authorities to maintain transparency and accountability in addressing the challenges posed by disinformation campaigns. The establishment of the JTF signals a proactive approach towards addressing the issue and upholding the integrity of the state and its institutions.
