Freeway Rage Tragedy: Costa Mesa Man Sentenced to 40 Years for Killing 6-Year-Old

Costa Mesa, California – Marcus Anthony Eriz, a resident of Costa Mesa, received a sentence of 40 years to life for the fatal shooting of 6-year-old Aiden Leos during a road rage incident on the 55 Freeway. The Orange County judge handed down the sentence, following Eriz’s conviction in January on charges that included second-degree murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle.

Eriz expressed remorse during the sentencing hearing, apologizing for the pain he caused and recognizing Aiden as a beloved son, brother, and friend. Despite his defense attorney’s plea for a lesser sentence, the judge imposed the harshest penalty.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer condemned Eriz’s actions, emphasizing the devastating impact on Aiden’s family and the community. Aiden’s tragic death shook the region, sparking a statewide manhunt for the perpetrators involved in the senseless act of violence.

The incident occurred on May 21, 2021, when Aiden was on his way to kindergarten with his mother on the 55 Freeway. Following a minor altercation with another driver, Eriz fired a fatal shot at the mother’s vehicle, causing Aiden’s untimely death. The driver of the Volkswagen involved in the incident, Wynne Lee, also faces charges of accessory after the fact and possession of a concealed firearm.

The California Highway Patrol’s efforts led to the arrest of Eriz and Lee, bringing some closure to the case. The tragic outcome serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of road rage and the tragic consequences that can result from such confrontations.

Eriz’s sentencing marks a significant milestone in seeking justice for Aiden and his family, underscoring the importance of accountability in cases of senseless violence. As the community grapples with the loss of a young life, the hope for justice and healing remains at the forefront of efforts to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
