Four children, their mother and grandmother were found dead after a welfare check.
MECHANICVILLE, N.Y. — Police identified six family members found dead Tuesday evening inside a Harris Avenue apartment as investigators continued a criminal probe into the deaths of four children and two adults.
The victims were Amy Steadman, 64; her daughter, Sarah Myers, 44; and Myers’ children, Harper Harmon, 13, Hudson Harmon, 11, and 10-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn Harmon. Police said the bodies were found during a welfare check at Steadman’s apartment in the John S. Moore Homes complex.
Officers went to the residence around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday after neighbors reported they had not seen the family for several days. Mechanicville Police Chief William Rabbitt said the case is being treated as criminal while medical examiners work to determine how each person died. Police said there was no known threat to the public and no current evidence that an outside person was involved.
Investigators from Mechanicville police and the New York State Police Major Crimes Unit remained at the Harris Avenue property Wednesday. Authorities said autopsies and toxicology testing were expected to guide the next stage of the case. The cause and manner of death had not been officially released.
Steadman lived in the apartment where the bodies were discovered, while Myers and her children lived in another unit in the same complex. Police said all six were found in Steadman’s residence. The children’s ages and the number of victims deepened the impact in the small Saratoga County city north of Albany.
Rabbitt said Mechanicville is a close community and many residents knew the family or had children and grandchildren of their own. School officials said counseling would be available for students and staff as the city absorbed the deaths.
Police said the investigation remained active Thursday, with final findings dependent on autopsy and toxicology results. No arrests had been announced.
