Akron, Ohio – A man from Akron, Ohio, has been sentenced to more than two decades in prison for causing a house fire that resulted in an explosion injuring two firefighters. Timothy Christian, 43, received a sentence of 22 to 26 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple felony charges, including aggravated arson, complicity in the commission of an offense, conspiracy, and felonious assault.
Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Jennifer Towell handed down the sentence, emphasizing the serious nature of the crimes committed by Christian. In addition to his prison term, Christian will also be required to register as an arson offender for life.
The incident occurred on August 15, 2022, when firefighters responded to a blaze at Christian’s residence on Winton Avenue, Akron. Upon entering the house to extinguish the fire, an explosion occurred, causing injuries to the two firefighters and leading to a partial collapse of the home.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Christian and another individual, Stanley Winchester, had purchased gas cannisters prior to the fire. Winchester, 69, also of Akron, pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated arson and felonious assault in connection to the incident. He was scheduled to testify against Christian at trial and is set to be sentenced in April.
Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich expressed satisfaction with the sentencing, noting that the public is now safer with Christian behind bars for an extended period. Kolkovich also extended his sympathies to the injured firefighters, acknowledging the risks they face in the line of duty while attempting to save others.
The deliberate actions of Christian and Winchester not only endangered the lives of the firefighters but also caused significant damage to the property.
