Los Angeles, California – Los Angeles Councilmember Tim McOsker hosted a Community Barbecue in Wilmington to honor, thank, and raise money for the firefighters at Los Angeles City Fire Department Stations 38 and 49. These two firehouses were the first to respond on February 15 when a natural-gas-powered trailer caught fire and exploded, resulting in injuries to nine firefighters, two of whom were critically injured.
The incident occurred at 1120 N. Alameda St. in Wilmington at 7 a.m. Ten firefighters were involved in fighting the fire when it ignited and exploded. The truck involved ran on compressed natural gas and was equipped with two 100-pound tanks. The driver had noticed issues with the truck before the explosion, prompting her to call 911 and evacuate the vehicle. About six minutes after firefighters arrived, one of the tanks exploded, leading to injuries among the firefighters. The explosion took place at the intersection of Alameda and Henry Ford Avenue near a recycling facility.
Following the explosion, approximately 150 firefighters responded to the scene and provided medical assistance to the injured firefighters. The injured individuals were later transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, with one of them airlifted to Los Angeles General Hospital. Station 38 is located at 124 E “I” St. in Wilmington, while Station 40 is situated at 330 Ferry St. in San Pedro.
During a news conference on February 15 at the hospital, McOsker expressed his gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders. He emphasized the dangers of their job and commended their bravery in the face of adversity.
