Debate Turns Violent: Man Attacks Others Over Religious Views at Florida Gas Station

Palm Coast, Florida – Two men were involved in a violent altercation outside a convenience store, leading to one man being stabbed multiple times and the other sustaining facial bruises. The incident occurred during a discussion on religion that escalated into a physical confrontation at a gas station in Palm Coast on the night of March 17.

Upon arrival at the scene, authorities found one man with severe lacerations to his neck, back, and left side, while the other victim had visible bruises from being struck multiple times. The altercation reportedly began as a conversation that quickly turned into a heated debate about religion. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Hunter Detherow, allegedly became agitated and resorted to violence, attacking the two men and fleeing the scene on foot.

Following an investigation, Detherow was apprehended at his residence and charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He is currently held in custody on a $300,000 bond. Sheriff Rick Staly emphasized that resorting to physical violence is not the way to resolve disagreements, especially when discussing sensitive topics like religion or politics.

Both victims survived the attack, with one being hospitalized for treatment of his injuries. The details of their conditions have not been disclosed, but the nature of the assault highlights the potential dangers that can arise from heated discussions turning violent. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining civility and respect when engaging in conversations, even when opinions differ.
