Fairfield, Ohio — A fire and explosion at a poultry processing facility early Sunday resulted in the tragic death of one worker and left two others injured. The incident at the Koch Foods plant began around 1:00 a.m. and escalated into a three-alarm fire, prompting a response from over 100 firefighters across approximately 20 agencies.
The blaze continued for several hours, leading to the partial collapse of the roof of the 600,000-square-foot structure. Fire officials reported that the situation was complicated by initial fears of an ammonia leak, leading to the deployment of the Greater Cincinnati Hazardous Materials Unit at 3:30 a.m. Firefighters examined the premises for potential chemical releases but determined that no hazardous materials were detected.
The identity of the deceased worker was confirmed as Griffin Darrow, according to the Butler County Coroner’s Office. The coroner’s report indicated that Darrow died from smoke inhalation. Two other employees were hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the event.
A spokesperson for Koch Foods expressed condolences for Darrow’s loss, noting that the company is also mindful of its other employees who were impacted by the tragedy. The company confirmed that its workforce is undergoing emotional support measures in light of the incident.
Despite prior smaller incidents at the facility, Deputy Fire Chief Steve Conn emphasized that Koch Foods has “extensive emergency protocols” in place. He noted the facility’s preparedness and response measures, indicating that this particular incident was unprecedented in terms of severity.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be probing the incident to assess whether any safety violations occurred leading up to the fire. This investigation aims to ensure that workplace conditions meet federal safety standards and to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
As the community reels from the loss, efforts are underway to provide support to affected families and employees, highlighting the importance of safety in industrial environments.
