Fentanyl Dealer Linked to Fatal Overdoses Gets 23 Years in Federal Prison

A man from Alvord, Texas, was sentenced to nearly 23 years in federal prison last week for drug charges related to multiple overdose deaths. Rhett Barclay, 23, admitted to conspiracy to possess with intent to deliver fentanyl in February. The sentencing, conducted by U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman in Fort Worth, resulted in Barclay receiving a 275-month prison term.

Barclay’s arrest in January of the previous year followed an incident where his girlfriend, Kennedy Howard, passed away from an apparent overdose at a residence on County Road 2391 east of Alvord. Howard, who was pregnant at the time, tragically lost her life while under Barclay’s care, leaving behind their toddler as a witness to the devastating event.

Authorities discovered counterfeit Oxycontin pills laced with fentanyl during a search of the property where Howard overdosed. Sheriff Lane Akin mentioned that the pills labeled as “M30” have been known to contain the dangerous synthetic opioid, fentanyl. This discovery shed light on Barclay’s involvement in multiple overdose deaths, including that of his own unborn child.

Federal court records revealed that Barclay had been distributing fentanyl in the North Texas area since January 2021. He admitted to obtaining fentanyl from different sources and supplying it to customers. Tragically, on two separate occasions, individuals who ingested fentanyl from Barclay’s residence suffered fatal overdoses, emphasizing the lethal consequences of the drug.

In addition to the federal prison sentence, Barclay received five years of supervised release after serving his term. Prior to his federal conviction, Barclay had pleaded guilty to a state jail felony offense in Wise County for endangering a child during the January 2023 incident. This additional legal trouble further underscored Barclay’s criminal activities and the devastating impact of his drug distribution operations.

The sentencing of Rhett Barclay serves as a poignant reminder of the severe consequences of trafficking in dangerous substances like fentanyl. Law enforcement officials and prosecutors are committed to holding accountable those who contribute to the opioid crisis and the tragic loss of life it causes. This case highlights the importance of addressing the root causes of drug addiction and preventing further tragedies in communities across the country.
