Father’s Heroic Effort Ends in Tragic Loss on Lake

WINTER HAVEN, FL – A family outing on Lake Roy turned tragic when a 12-year-old boy drowned despite his father’s heroic efforts to save him. The family, taking a break during spring break in Polk County, had set out to enjoy a day of fishing and swimming on the lake.

The father, accompanied by his 9-year-old son, 12-year-old son, and 10-year-old nephew, took the boys to the middle of the lake for a swim. However, the weather took a turn for the worse, with gusts reaching up to 30 miles per hour, making the water choppy and challenging to navigate.

As the children began to struggle in the water, the father managed to pull his younger son and nephew back onto the boat. His 12-year-old son, Noah Gomez, began drifting away due to the strong winds and rough water. In a desperate bid to save him, the father jumped into the water, carrying Noah on his back as he swam toward the boat.

Tragically, Noah slipped from his father’s grip, sinking into the lake’s depths, estimated to be about 18 or 19 feet deep. One of the children on the boat called 911, prompting an immediate response from Winter Haven Police, Winter Haven Fire Rescue, and Polk County Fire Rescue.

The search for Noah was swift, aided by a specialized dive team that happened to be training nearby. Despite the advanced equipment and quick response, Noah was found lifeless within two hours. His passing has left a deep void in the family, with his younger brother and cousin grieving the loss.

Authorities confirmed that the boys were not wearing life jackets, a decision that has sparked a somber reminder about the importance of safety gear. The family, familiar with the area and experienced swimmers, had not anticipated the sudden change in weather conditions.

The community mourns alongside the grieving family, acknowledging the father’s attempt to create cherished memories with his children. As summer approaches, officials urge parents to prioritize safety, recommending life vests even for proficient swimmers, especially in unpredictable weather.

The incident underscores the need for vigilance and preparedness when engaging in water activities. While the father’s intention was to bond with his children, the unexpected tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the importance of respecting safety guidelines.
