Lewisville, Texas – A tragic incident in a Lewisville parking lot left a young father dead after what started as a minor car crash. The victim, 27-year-old Jonathan Berto, was found shot to death next to his truck, sparking shock and grief in the community.
The heartbreaking discovery was made by Berto’s mother, Rosa Berto-Chapa, who became worried when her son failed to arrive to pick up his girlfriend and their newborn child. Through a mother’s intuition, she located him in a Lewisville auto shop parking lot, lifeless and covered in a white plastic bag.
Investigations revealed that the fatal shooting occurred shortly after a small collision, captured on surveillance video from the auto shop. The footage showed the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Arrion Morris, pulling up next to Berto’s truck in a black Tahoe and opening fire with a semi-automatic firearm. Morris then fled the scene, leaving Berto fatally wounded.
Authorities were able to track down Morris using the surveillance footage, which also showed his license plate number. He was apprehended by Mesquite police at his residence and now faces murder charges in connection to Berto’s death.
Berto’s grieving mother expressed her anguish at the senseless loss of her son, emphasizing the impact on his young family. She lamented that her granddaughter would never have the chance to know her father, robbed of the opportunity to share precious moments with him.
Morris is currently being held at Denton County jail on a $2 million bond. Records show that he has a prior arrest for manslaughter dating back to 2002 in Mississippi, adding a troubling layer to the tragic events that unfolded in Lewisville. As the community mourns the loss of Jonathan Berto, questions remain about the senselessness of the violence that claimed his life.
