Family’s Knicks Celebration Turns Tragic After LAPD Shoots Dog

An LAPD welfare check that began with reports of screaming has prompted community concern and an official review.

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles police are reviewing an officer-involved shooting that left a family dog dead after officers responded to reports of a screaming woman at a Canoga Park condominium complex on Saturday evening.

Authorities said officers were dispatched to Jordan Avenue after a caller reported hearing distressing screams from inside the residential building. According to police, officers encountered a dog identified as Jameson and opened fire after the animal allegedly rushed toward them.

The shooting occurred during what family members describe as a celebration of the New York Knicks’ NBA championship. Relatives said the woman whose screams prompted the emergency call was reacting to the game and celebrating with family members inside the condo.

Images taken before the encounter showed Jameson dressed in Knicks apparel while spending time with the family. The dog, a 2-year-old mix of golden retriever, Saint Bernard and poodle breeds, was described by relatives as affectionate and playful.

Video recorded after the shooting captured anguished reactions from family members. The dog’s owner could be heard shouting that the family had simply been celebrating. Neighbors who witnessed the aftermath described scenes of confusion and grief as residents tried to understand what had happened.

The incident has drawn attention because it began as a welfare check rather than a criminal investigation. Such calls are intended to determine whether someone may be in danger or in need of assistance. In this case, officers arrived after a concerned neighbor believed the screams indicated a possible emergency.

Residents interviewed following the shooting expressed sympathy for both the family and the caller. Several said they understood why someone might contact authorities after hearing repeated screams but were troubled by how the encounter ended.

Questions remain about the moments immediately preceding the shooting, including how officers approached the residence and whether alternative methods were considered before lethal force was used. Police have not publicly released detailed information regarding those events.

As the investigation continues, neighbors have gathered to remember Jameson. Memorial items have been placed near the location where he was shot, turning a residential hallway into a temporary tribute to the dog.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under review. Investigators are expected to examine witness statements and other available evidence as part of the process.
