Court records say surveillance video showed a man moving the gun after Tre’Shawn Moore was shot.
FERRIS, Texas — Arrest documents say Takievion Holmes was recorded on home surveillance after a child picked up an unattended gun and fatally shot 7-year-old Tre’Shawn Moore inside a Ferris home on May 23.
Holmes, 23, is charged with tampering with physical evidence and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Ferris officials said the case remains under investigation with help from the Texas Rangers, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office and the Ellis County District Attorney’s Office.
Emergency responders were sent to a home on Tidwell Drive after a report of a juvenile with a gunshot wound in the living room, according to arrest records obtained by CBS News Texas. Investigators said they arrived at 10:51 a.m. and found that a juvenile resident had picked up an unattended firearm and fired it. The shot struck Moore in the upper torso. Ferris City Manager Dr. Brooks Williams called the death “an unimaginable tragedy” and said the impact reaches beyond one home or one street.
The affidavit says Holmes was seen on an internal surveillance system during the commotion. Investigators wrote that Holmes picked up the gun, walked toward his room and later left the Tidwell Drive home. Police said multiple witnesses supported that account. The records say Holmes eluded officers at a local convenience store before he was arrested at a small neighborhood park near the home. Investigators said he had been riding in an SUV with his girlfriend, who has not been charged.
Authorities have said other children were present when the shooting happened. Early statements from Ferris police said a very young child accessed a firearm inside the home before another child was fatally shot. Officials have not released all details about how the gun was left unattended or who owned it. The city first announced the arrest days after the shooting and said additional charges remained under review.
According to the affidavit, investigators later played the home surveillance video for Holmes. They also confronted him with witness statements that said he had brought the gun into the house. The document says Holmes admitted taking the gun and running from the scene because Moore had been shot. Prosecutors are expected to review the full case file before deciding whether more charges will be filed.
Ferris officials said chaplaincy services were made available for first responders, relatives and neighbors affected by the shooting. John DeLeon, the deputy city manager overseeing public safety, said investigators were focused on building the case according to the facts. CBS News Texas reported that no one answered at the home when a reporter sought comment, and a family member declined an interview request.
Moore’s funeral was held June 6. The investigation remains active, and the next major step is a prosecutorial review of evidence gathered by Ferris police and partner agencies.
