Family-Linked Fight Turns Deadly Outside Houston Home, Police Say

Investigators are working to determine what caused a fight involving two men connected through a family relationship.

HOUSTON — Detectives were questioning witnesses Sunday after a fight between two men connected through their partners’ family escalated into a fatal shooting outside a southeast Houston home.

The shooting was reported around 11:10 p.m. Saturday in the 3700 block of Odin Court, near Texas Highway 288 and Old Spanish Trail. A woman who saw the confrontation called 911, and police arrived to find a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Houston Fire Department paramedics began CPR before taking the wounded man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police described him as a man believed to be in his 30s but had not publicly identified him Sunday morning.

Investigators said the man suspected of firing the gun is in his 50s and is engaged to the mother of the victim’s girlfriend. Police have not said why the men were together at the home or what prompted their fight.

The suspected shooter was detained at the scene and later taken to a hospital in stable condition. Officers also recovered a firearm they believe was used in the shooting. Authorities had not announced whether the man had been arrested or charged.

The woman who witnessed the shooting was detained while detectives gathered her account and was cooperating with the investigation, police said. A second woman who was inside the home reported hearing gunfire but said she did not see what happened outside.

The differing viewpoints could help investigators reconstruct the confrontation, including how the fight began and when the firearm was drawn. Police had not released information about statements made by the two men or whether anyone else took part in the altercation.

The investigation remained active Sunday. The identities of the victim and suspected shooter, the reason for the fight and any possible criminal charges had not been released.
