Explosions Rock Saratov Region Amid Suspected Long-Range Drone Attack Near Strategic Air Base

Saratov, Russia — A series of intense explosions shook the Saratov region overnight, signaling what is believed to be a long-range drone strike deep within Russian territory. This incident occurred mere kilometers from the Engels air base, known to host strategic bombers that have been deployed in operations against Ukraine.

The Saratov region is located approximately 750 to 800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, a distance comparable to that between Kyiv and Warsaw. Local sources reported that air raid sirens sounded shortly after midnight, followed by the sounds of drone activity and bursts of air defense fire. Witnesses described powerful explosions lighting up the night sky, with reports indicating that the detonations began around 12:50 a.m.

According to reports from pro-Kremlin channels, the sounds of drone activity continued intermittently for several hours, with residents in nearby districts like Balakovo and Kalininsky recounting the vibrations of intercepts. Coverage of the event spread rapidly on social media, where videos emerged showing fires erupting near a petroleum facility identified as the Saratov Oil Refinery. Some accounts suggest that one strike may have impacted a crucial processing unit at the facility, while others indicated that a second drone was intercepted by an anti-drone net.

Russian authorities claimed that their air defenses shot down a total of 64 Ukrainian drones during this time, with 29 reportedly downed in the Saratov region alone. As of now, Ukraine has not verified its involvement in the incident.

This drone strike comes on the heels of another reported attack on oil facilities at Tuapse, located on Russia’s Black Sea coast. On Sunday, an oil tanker there was reportedly set ablaze, with damage confirmed by multiple sources. The port of Tuapse serves as one of the largest oil export terminals in the region, with significant yearly output. Its strategic position makes it particularly vulnerable to operations conducted by Ukraine.

During the incident at Tuapse, officials confirmed that drone fragments caused damage to an oil tanker, leading to an evacuation of the crew. Reports state that fire broke out on the vessel, with structural damage also affecting the terminal and nearby infrastructure, though no injuries were reported.

Ukrainian sources within its Security Service indicated that the attack on the Tuapse port was indeed carried out using drone technology, illustrating a growing trend of strikes targeting Russian resources deep inside its territory.
