Explosion at Meth Lab in Taylor County Leads to Fatalities, Man Sentenced to Five Years

Athens, Wisconsin – A man from Athens, Wisconsin has been handed a five-year prison sentence along with five years of extended supervision following a tragic incident involving a meth lab explosion in Taylor County that resulted in the death of one individual. Matthew Zarins was sentenced after pleading guilty to charges of homicide by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon/explosive and maintaining a drug trafficking place, as indicated by court records.

The incident, which took place on January 11, 2023, at N44 Clark Drive in the Town of Maplehurst, was reported to the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office as a structure fire. Upon arrival at the scene, authorities discovered a residence engulfed in flames, with Zarins reporting to have escaped alongside his wife, who sustained burn injuries. Investigation revealed that the house lacked basic utilities such as water and electricity and relied on wood heating. The destruction was extensive, reducing the dwelling to a charred frame.

During a search of the burnt premises, law enforcement officials uncovered a range of items suggestive of methamphetamine production, including glassware, beakers, and other drug paraphernalia. Despite the discoveries, Zarins professed ignorance and denied involvement in the manufacturing of methamphetamine although he did admit to recent methamphetamine use. Tragically, 51-year-old Jennifer Johnson of Stanley succumbed to her injuries from the fire on January 12, 2023.
