Domestic Violence Tragedy: DeKalb Woman Beaten to Death by Boyfriend, Faces First-Degree Murder Charge

DeKalb, Illinois – Authorities in DeKalb have charged a 30-year-old man with the brutal murder of his 31-year-old girlfriend, Jasmine Dejournette. Dejournette was found dead in her home on West Hillcrest Drive on Tuesday morning, succumbing to severe facial injuries that resulted in brain hemorrhaging. The accused, Devonne L. Montgomery, a convicted felon, called 911 to report the incident.

Montgomery faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, felony aggravated domestic battery, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Court records reveal a history of violence towards Dejournette, with over 8,000 instant messages exchanged between the couple detailing instances of abuse.

Family and friends of Dejournette have set up a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and pay tribute to her kindhearted nature. Her brother, Kevin Catlin, described her as a loving, selfless individual who always put others first.

Authorities discovered evidence of a violent struggle at the scene, including bloody clothing, a loaded pistol, and shoes matching the injuries found on Dejournette’s face. Despite initially denying involvement, Montgomery’s phone location data placed him at the scene during the time of the crime.

Montgomery appeared in court before Circuit Court Judge Philip Montgomery, where he was ordered to remain in custody pending trial. Public defender Chip Criswell represented Montgomery, with a status hearing scheduled for February 5. The judge approved prosecutor Alicia Caplan’s petition to deny release.
