Distracted Drunk Driving Tragedy: New Jersey Man Sentenced to 8 ⅓ to 25 Years for Aggravated Vehicular Homicide

Iselin, New Jersey – A 24-year-old man from Iselin, Middlesex County, was sentenced to 8 ⅓ to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide in the death of Katie Fisher in Albany County Court. Vasu Laroiya admitted to Snapchatting while driving drunk at 156 miles per hour on I-87 in Colonie when his Tesla struck Fisher’s Honda Civic on the night of May 28, 2022. Fisher, a junior at the University at Albany, tragically succumbed to her injuries after the collision. Laroiya, who had a prior alcohol-related conviction, had his license revoked in addition to his prison time.

Fisher, a graduate of Ballston Spa High School, was remembered for her contagious laughter and bright personality. She had recently received her associate degree from SUNY Adirondack and was looking forward to pursuing a career in teaching.

The tragic incident brings attention to the dangers of distracted and drunk driving, as well as the devastating impact it can have on innocent lives. In the wake of her passing, Fisher’s family, friends, and community mourn the loss of a promising young woman with a vibrant spirit. The case also highlights the importance of stiffer penalties and enforcement for those who choose to drive under the influence, endangering the lives of others on the road. The sentencing of Laroiya serves as a reminder of the severe consequences that can come from irresponsible behavior behind the wheel. As the community continues to grieve the loss of Fisher, they hope to raise awareness about the dangers of drunk and distracted driving and the need for stricter measures to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
