Youngstown, Ohio – After a deadly blast six weeks ago, demolition has commenced on the Realty Tower in downtown Youngstown. The explosion on May 10 resulted in one fatality and left nine others injured, prompting concerns over the building’s structural integrity and the risk of imminent collapse.
The incident, which occurred at 2:44 p.m., claimed the life of Chase Bank employee Akil Drake, 27, and caused significant damage to the tower. Surveillance footage captured the chaotic moments leading up to the explosion as residents evacuated the premises following a fire alarm.
Investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board revealed that the blast was triggered by a gas pipeline being inadvertently cut by a scrap-removal crew. The crew, unaware that the line was pressurized, was in the process of relocating utilities for a city road improvement project.
Following the incident, city officials ordered the evacuation of nearby International Towers and DoubleTree Hotel out of fear of a potential collapse at the Realty Tower. Plans are underway to partially demolish the tower by August 2, allowing for the reopening of the two affected buildings.
As demolition began on the Realty Tower, its owner, YO Properties 47 LLC, expressed regret over the loss of life and the fate of the building. They emphasized their commitment to Youngstown’s community and pledged to honor the tower’s legacy by rejuvenating the site in the future.
The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety protocols and thorough inspections in construction and demolition projects. The city continues to mourn the loss of life and property while looking towards a future where revitalization and progress can coexist harmoniously in Youngstown’s urban landscape.
