Abuja, Nigeria — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has denounced a recent violent attack on the National Secretariat of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), labeling it a serious threat to democracy in the country. This incident involved armed individuals allegedly directed by senior officials from the ruling party, which the ADC claims is indicative of a broader assault on democratic principles in Nigeria.
In a statement released by Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, the party criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu for resorting to intimidation and violence to undermine opposition parties. Abdullahi expressed concern that such actions pose a significant danger to the country’s multiparty democracy, hinting at an increasing tendency toward one-party dominance.
“This incident is unequivocally a perilous escalation within our democratic landscape, one that all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliation, should denounce,” Abdullahi remarked. He characterized the attack as part of a pattern of anti-democratic behavior displayed by Tinubu’s government since it took power.
The ADC highlighted that recent government actions have contributed to a climate of fear among opposition entities, stating that the administration has set a concerning precedent. Their statement warned that if such tactics are employed against political parties, they could easily extend to labor unions, the media, and other civic organizations.
The ADC urged citizens and international allies alike to recognize the gravity of the situation, advocating for engagement with the Nigerian government to promote adherence to democratic norms and protect civil liberties. It emphasized the need for heightened vigilance as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
“Let us be clear: this is not merely a PDP issue; this is about safeguarding the future of democracy in Nigeria,” the ADC said. They believe the ruling party’s actions are part of a broader strategy to weaken political opposition and destabilize democratic processes.
The party has also called for a thorough investigation into the involvement of security forces in the attack, citing concerns over their role in exacerbating political tensions. In closing, the ADC appealed to President Tinubu to control his political affiliates and prevent further chaos, urging a return to lawful governance based on democratic values.
