Dalit Groom Attacked in Agra Over Loud Music: 2 Detained

AGRA, India – In a horrifying incident in a village in Agra, India, a Dalit wedding procession was violently attacked by members of an upper-caste community for playing loud music. The groom, Rohit Kumar, was forcefully removed from the mare he was riding, assaulted, and robbed of his gold chain. The incident occurred as the procession passed in front of houses belonging to the accused individuals, leading to a brutal confrontation.

According to reports, the attackers emerged from their homes armed with sticks and sharp objects, causing fear and chaos among the groom’s family and guests. Some guests sustained injuries and had to be rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment. Following the attack, the wedding party promptly turned off the music and lights, seeking refuge in a nearby wedding hall out of concern for their safety.

Two individuals have been apprehended in connection with the incident, which took place in the Garhi Rammi village in the Khandauli area of Agra district. Authorities have filed a case against nine identified individuals and 20 unnamed persons under various sections of the law, including those pertaining to rioting, unlawful assembly, causing harm, and assault.

“The actions of the accused have caused great distress and harm to the victims, and swift legal action has been taken to address this appalling act of violence,” stated SHO Anand Veer. The incident highlights the ongoing discrimination and violence faced by marginalized communities, underscoring the persistent challenges of caste-based prejudices in Indian society.

Local residents have expressed shock and outrage over the attack, calling for justice and an end to such heinous acts of aggression based on caste differences.
