TUCSON, AZ – A cyclist’s death near the Diamond Street Cycling Loop has sent shockwaves through Tucson’s biking community. The deadly altercation, which took place around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, is currently under investigation as police search for a suspect.
The Loop, known for providing a traffic-free cycling experience, is now under scrutiny as cyclists voice concerns about safety. The presence of unhoused individuals along the route has added to fears about potential criminal activity.
One cyclist, requesting anonymity, recounted unsettling experiences that have made him wary of using the Loop. Despite these concerns, many riders, including Angela Wake, continue to use the path, citing their own uneventful experiences.
In an effort to address safety, Pima County previously launched patrols along the Loop from August 2020 to June 2021. The initiative yielded mixed results, leading officials to discontinue the program due to cost concerns.
Authorities are appealing to the public for information through 88-CRIME as they work to resolve the case. Meanwhile, cyclists are calling for renewed focus on safety improvements along the popular trail.
The incident has also highlighted broader issues such as homelessness and the need for community solutions to ensure safety for all who frequent the Loop.
