AUSTIN, TX – A troubling discovery at a North Austin apartment complex has led to the arrest of a 22-year-old woman after her newborn was found abandoned in a dumpster. Nelly Denor Rivera Felipe faces felony charges following this harrowing incident.
The baby was reportedly in the dumpster for more than 16 hours before being found by residents, according to court records. Felipe, who gave birth in her apartment, claimed she believed the child was lifeless when she made the decision to abandon it.
The next day, Felipe returned to the dumpster to dispose of additional trash, unaware that the infant had survived. Residents discovered the newborn later that day and immediately contacted emergency services, who provided critical care.
The infant is currently in stable condition at a local hospital, receiving necessary medical attention. Authorities are urging individuals in similar situations to seek help, emphasizing the availability of the Safe Haven Law in Texas. This law allows parents to legally and safely surrender infants at designated locations without legal repercussions.
Despite 11 safe surrenders in Texas this year, none have occurred in Travis County. Officials stress the importance of utilizing these options to protect vulnerable infants.
Felipe is being held on a $50,000 bond as the investigation continues. This case highlights the essential role of community vigilance and support for parents in distress.
