Custody of Six Suspects Following Violent Attack on Lagos Traffic Officials During Midnight Enforcement Operation

LAGOS, Nigeria — A Lagos State Mobile Court has remanded six individuals in custody following a violent confrontation with officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) during a midnight enforcement operation along Airport Road. The incident has raised concerns about safety and law enforcement in the region.

The suspects, involved in a series of attacks against government officials, were among seven arraigned on multiple charges, including assault, during a court session on Tuesday. One defendant entered a not guilty plea and was released on bail; however, the remaining six will remain in custody until further proceedings scheduled for February 19, 2026.

The enforcement operation, led by LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, was conducted in collaboration with security forces and various agencies, including the Kick Against Indiscipline Corps and the Lagos State Task Force. It aimed to address illegal activities by commercial bus operators and criminal groups, which have flooded the airport corridor with complaints from the Nigerian Airport Authority (NPA).

The NPA has described the conduct of these individuals as a significant public nuisance, characterized by intimidation and harassment of commuters. During the enforcement action, five enforcement officers were reported injured due to armed attacks, and a tow truck belonging to the Authority was intentionally set ablaze.

Despite the violent resistance, Bakare-Oki commended the joint task force for their professionalism and restraint during the operation. Their efforts led to the confiscation of 56 vehicles, encompassing 44 commercial buses, five private vehicles, and seven trucks, all for various traffic and environmental violations.

Bakare-Oki reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding public safety and order, warning that unlawful activities will not be tolerated. He assured citizens that measures to maintain law and order along key routes in Lagos will persist in coordination with partner agencies.

The operation underscores a broader struggle against disorderly conduct in Lagos, as officials continue to face challenges in implementing traffic regulations and safeguarding public infrastructure. The tense atmosphere surrounding the enforcement actions reflects ongoing societal tensions regarding law enforcement and public safety in the rapidly evolving urban landscape.
