Custody Dispute Turns Deadly in Upper East Side Murder-Suicide

New York City, NY – Tragedy struck on the Upper East Side of New York City as a mother and grandmother lost their lives in a heartbreaking incident on Friday morning. The NYPD is currently investigating the situation as a murder-suicide resulting from a custody dispute.

The incident took place on East 88th Street, situated between York Avenue and East End Avenue. Emergency responders from the FDNY arrived on the scene shortly before 9 a.m. to a devastating sight.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered two women who had sustained gunshot wounds- one found in the street near a parked Honda Civic, and the other lying on the sidewalk. Both victims had been shot in the head, according to the NYPD.

In a fortunate turn of events, a one-year-old child was found unharmed in the back of the car where the shooting occurred. Authorities believe the shooter to be the child’s grandmother, a retired probation officer from Illinois who had been residing in New York City for the past three years. Police recovered two firearms from the scene and have ruled out the involvement of any additional suspects.

The victim has been identified as the child’s mother, who was tragically shot while loading a stroller into the car’s trunk. Authorities are delving into the motive behind the shooting, linking it to an ongoing domestic dispute marked by multiple reports of domestic incidents and complaints related to a custody battle.

Coincidentally, the shooting unfolded just a stone’s throw away from Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Eric Adams, situated east of East End Avenue. The close proximity of the incident to a prominent city landmark has added a layer of shock and sadness to the community.

This devastating event serves as a somber reminder of the complexities and tragedies that can arise from family disputes and domestic conflicts. The loss of two lives, including that of a grandmother and a mother, has left a deep impact on the Upper East Side community. As the investigation into the circumstances of the incident continues, the community mourns the lives lost and grapples with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence.
