ALLEGAN COUNTY, Mich. — A serious crash involving a semi-truck caused a spectacular fire and significant disruption on I-196 on Monday morning, leading to the freeway’s closure. Officials from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) anticipate that this section of the highway could reopen by Tuesday evening, contingent on the results of ongoing safety inspections.
The truck lost control around 7 a.m., crashing through barriers before sliding down an embankment and igniting. Firefighters quickly responded to the scene, battling the blaze and securing the area. Saugatuck Township Fire Chief Greg Janik reported that the inspection of the bridge above the crash site is critical to determine its structural integrity, especially after the fire burned beneath it.
“Once we receive clearance that the bridge can safely support traffic, we will proceed with additional cleanup efforts,” Janik stated. His team promptly focused on assessing damage to the bridge’s columns and beams affected by the incident.
Eyewitness Jaren Slenker described the chaotic scene as he witnessed the accident unfold. He recounted how bystanders rushed to the driver’s aid, pulling him from the vehicle moments before the fuel tanks exploded, sending fuel spilling onto the road. “It felt like something out of an action movie,” Slenker said, adding drama to the harrowing ordeal.
MDOT spokeswoman Jocelyn Garza noted that concrete barriers would be utilized to establish a single lane for traffic, allowing limited access to that section of the freeway as soon as it is cleared for use. The damage caused by the accident has left significant remnants; black soot and debris are visible on the overpass, and Old Allegan Road beneath remains closed while repairs are assessed.
As firefighters work to remove the remnants of the truck, officials continue to prioritize both safety and efficiency to restore normal traffic flow. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers present on the roadways and underscores the importance of emergency response protocols in mitigating harm.
