Convicted Murderer of 11-Year-Old Ryan Harris Dies in Prison

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – A man convicted of the 1998 rape and murder of 11-year-old Ryan Harris in Chicago has passed away while serving a life sentence in prison. Floyd Durr, the perpetrator of this heinous crime, was incarcerated in Englewood. This case gained national attention due to initial accusations against two young boys, ages 7 and 8, before DNA evidence linked the crime to Durr.

Prior to being charged in Harris’ case, Durr was already serving a 125-year sentence for sexually assaulting other girls. In 1999, he was officially charged with the rape and murder of Harris. Durr eventually pleaded guilty in 2007, receiving a life sentence in addition to 30 years. Despite his plea for clemency in 2021, Harris’ mother Sabrina vehemently opposed any leniency towards him.

The tragic case of Ryan Harris and the subsequent conviction of Floyd Durr highlight the importance of DNA evidence in criminal investigations. The justice system’s ability to correct initial mistakes and accurately identify perpetrators through scientific advancements is crucial in ensuring that the guilty are held accountable for their crimes.
