Raleigh, North Carolina – Jasmin Torres, widow of a Raleigh police officer killed in the Hedingham mass shooting, has been granted worker’s compensation benefits, as confirmed by a recent ruling. Officer Gabriel Torres, 29, was tragically shot and killed on his way to work in his personal vehicle on October 13, 2022. He was one of five victims who lost their lives when a 15-year-old gunman opened fire in the Hedingham neighborhood, where the Torres family resided.
Left behind by her husband’s untimely death, Jasmin Torres fought for recognition under North Carolina’s death benefit law, arguing that her husband was indeed working when the shooting occurred. After a careful review of the case, the North Carolina Industrial Commission ultimately ruled in her favor, determining that she is entitled to compensation for the next 500 weeks, amounting to $321.48 per week. This financial support will continue until the couple’s daughter reaches the age of 18, recognizing the impact of Gabriel Torres’ sacrifice on his family.
The ruling was influenced by a poignant phone call between Jasmin Torres and her husband just moments before the fatal shooting. In that conversation, Gabriel Torres conveyed that he had left for work and intended to investigate reports of gunshots in the area. Tragically, it was during this investigation that three shots were fired into his vehicle, resulting in his fatal injuries and subsequent death at a local hospital.
In reflecting on her husband’s final moments, Jasmin Torres shared her harrowing experience during his funeral in October 2022. She recounted the heart-wrenching moments of hearing the gunshots, rushing home, and discovering her husband severely wounded. The emotional toll of losing a loved one in the line of duty was palpable as she shared her memories and grief with those in attendance.
Meanwhile, the accused shooter, Austin Thompson, remains in custody at a juvenile facility located an hour away from Raleigh. A tentative trial date has been set for September 22, 2025; however, Thompson’s defense team is requesting a delay until 2026. Citing a brain injury and the extensive evidence involved in the case, they are seeking more time to adequately prepare for the legal proceedings ahead. The delays in the trial only serve to prolong the Torres family’s pursuit of justice and closure following Gabriel’s tragic passing.
