Chase Ends in Tragedy: Fatal Crash on I-64 Following High-Speed Pursuit in Berea

Berea, Kentucky — A dramatic police chase that began in Berea culminated in tragedy when the suspect lost control of his vehicle, leading to a fatal crash on Interstate 64 in Franklin County.

The series of events unfolded after authorities in Dalton, Georgia, discovered a body at a residence during their investigation of an overnight house fire. The individual found is believed to be linked to a suspect who had fled the scene. As part of their investigation, Berea Police issued an Attempt To Locate notice for the suspect. Earlier in the day, a FLOCK camera in Berea detected the suspect’s Honda Civic, prompting officers to act.

While parked at a Speedway convenience store off Prince Royal Drive, officers spotted the suspect. However, as law enforcement approached, the driver accelerated, sparking a pursuit that spanned multiple counties and involved various police agencies. Reports indicate that speeds during the chase reached over 100 miles per hour.

The situation escalated when the suspect crossed into oncoming traffic on I-64, ultimately colliding with a semi-truck near mile marker 53, not far from Frankfort. The impact was catastrophic, resulting in the suspect’s vehicle catching fire. Emergency personnel arrived on the scene, but the Franklin County Coroner declared the driver dead shortly thereafter.

The driver of the semi-truck, 50-year-old Marcus Boughten of Waco, Texas, fortunately escaped injury in the incident. Meanwhile, the Kentucky State Police have stated they are continuing their investigation and have not yet released the identity of the deceased suspect or the victim involved in the house fire in Dalton.

The nature of this incident has raised questions about safety and the protocols for police chases, especially in high-speed scenarios. As authorities work to uncover more details, the bereaved families are left grappling with loss and uncertainty surrounding both incidents.
