Charges Filed in Gang-Related Greensboro Shooting, Two Suspects Arrested

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Authorities have charged two men in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred nearly a year ago at Culture Lounge. On March 8, 2024, the incident claimed the lives of two individuals and injured a third.

Police have identified Jaylen Sawyer, 25, as the primary suspect, charging him with two counts of first-degree murder as well as additional charges related to his alleged actions during the incident. Traevon Wilson, 30, has also been charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder for allegedly assisting Sawyer in his escape after the shooting.

The incident unfolded shortly after 1 a.m. when officers responded to reports of gunfire at the popular Spring Garden Street venue, where approximately 100 patrons were gathered. Emergency personnel arrived to find multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite their efforts, two men, identified as 28-year-old Devonte Johnson and 24-year-old Mohsin Hamid, succumbed to their injuries at the scene. A woman who was shot survived her injuries.

Investigators determined that the shooting was not a random act, but rather a targeted event linked to gang activity. Video surveillance and ballistic evidence helped authorities pinpoint Sawyer as the sole shooter, emphasizing the systematic nature of the incident.

Sawyer remains in custody at the Guilford County Jail without bond. In a separate incident earlier this month, he was charged with firing at state troopers during a police chase in Randolph County, which included charges of assault with a deadly weapon.

Wilson’s involvement as an accessory came to light during the investigation, indicating that he allegedly supported Sawyer in fleeing the scene immediately following the shooting. Officials also noted the involvement of a third suspect, Marquise Taliaferro, who had been identified in the investigation but was killed in an unrelated shooting in October 2024.

As the investigation continues, the Greensboro community remains on edge, grappling with the violence that has unfolded in their neighborhoods. Local law enforcement is urging anyone with information about the shooting or related activities to come forward to aid in the ongoing efforts to enhance public safety.
