Charges Filed Against Alleged Gunman in Devastating Minneapolis Mass Shooting, Four Lives Lost

MINNEAPOLIS – The city is grappling with the aftermath of a tragic mass shooting that resulted in the deaths of four individuals, with authorities now confirming the identities of the victims. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office announced the names of those killed during a violent stretch this week, shedding light on the devastating impact of the events.

Among the victims are 27-year-old Evan Ramon Denny, 17-year-old Joseph Douglas Goodwin, and 20-year-old Merelle Joan White, who were all shot late Tuesday night in an incident on the 1500 block of 25th Street East. Autopsy reports indicate that all three died from multiple gunshot wounds, classifying their deaths as homicides.

Following these heart-wrenching events, authorities apprehended 34-year-old James Duane Ortley, who faces multiple murder and attempted murder charges connected to the shooting. Ortley was taken into custody on Thursday afternoon, with his initial court appearance delayed and rescheduled for May 5.

In a related incident the following day, 34-year-old Tiago Antonio Gilbert was shot and killed on the 2100 block of 17th Avenue South. Investigators believe that Gilbert’s death was a retaliatory act stemming from the earlier mass shooting. His autopsy also confirmed multiple gunshot wounds as the cause of death.

Additionally, police reported that 51-year-old Derrick Lamont Ewing was killed in a separate shooting on the 3000 block of 15th Avenue South later that same day. Though Ewing was taken to Hennepin Healthcare, efforts to save him were unsuccessful, and he too was pronounced dead. Unlike the previous incidents, Ewing’s death has been determined not to be connected to the mass shooting.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara provided updates on the ongoing investigations, emphasizing the department’s commitment to addressing the violence in the community. “These incidents highlight the urgent need for solutions to gun violence that afflict our neighborhoods,” he stated.

Community leaders and residents have expressed their concerns and grief over the violence that has unfolded in their city. Vigils are being organized to honor the lives lost and support affected families as they navigate this tragic chapter.

As the investigations proceed, authorities are urging anyone with information related to these shootings to come forward. The city’s law enforcement emphasizes cooperation from the community in efforts to restore safety and prevent further tragedies.

The emotional toll from the incidents continues to resonate throughout Minneapolis, prompting discussions about prevention and support for the families impacted by the violence. As the city reflects on these events, it faces not only the challenge of healing but also a commitment to fostering a safer environment for all its residents.
