Chad Office Attack Linked to Opposition Party Hours After Election Announcement

N’Djamena, Chad – The recent attack on Chad’s internal security agency in the capital city of N’Djamena has left several people dead, according to government officials. The government has attributed the assault on the National State Security Agency (ANSE) to individuals associated with the opposition Socialist Party Without Borders (PSF), led by Yaya Dillo.

The government has stated that the situation is now under control, with the perpetrators either arrested or being pursued for prosecution. Details on the exact number of casualties resulting from the attack have not been disclosed at this time.

Tensions escalated further when a PSF member, Ahmed Torabi, was arrested for an alleged assassination attempt on the President of the Supreme Court. Dillo has refuted these claims, labeling the incident as a setup orchestrated by the authorities.

According to the general secretary of PSF, the deaths near the security agency occurred when soldiers opened fire on party members, leading to a chaotic situation. Allegations continue to emerge surrounding the circumstances of Torabi’s death and the subsequent violent clashes at the agency’s headquarters.

Following the violent episode, heightened security measures were implemented, with the army surrounding PSF’s main office and restricting access to ANSE. Reports of sporadic gunshots and internet limitations in parts of N’Djamena have further exacerbated the tense atmosphere.

The government’s announcement of an upcoming presidential election on May 6 foreshadowed the timing of the ANSE attack, as political rivalries intensify within the country. Notably, opposition figure Dillo and transitional President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, both vying for the presidency, are set to engage in a contentious electoral battle.

Deby Itno, successor to his late father who ruled Chad for thirty years before his tragic demise, has pledged to uphold democratic processes and lead a successful transition of power. However, delays in the electoral timeline have sparked concerns about the stability and integrity of Chad’s political landscape during this pivotal moment.
