Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu – In a disturbing incident of alleged caste-based violence, a Scheduled Caste (SC) student was viciously attacked after a roadside dispute in Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu. The victim, a government college student, was reportedly assaulted with a sword by a group of young men following a minor altercation involving an elderly pedestrian. The incident occurred on February 12 around 6:30 PM as the student was returning home on his two-wheeler after classes.
According to officials, the situation escalated when the student confronted the elderly man, who abruptly crossed the road in front of his vehicle, resulting in a heated exchange. The altercation quickly turned violent as the group of young men, identified as Vinothkumar, Aadhi Eeswaran, and Vallarasu, allegedly began hurling caste-based insults at the student before attacking him with a sword, causing severe hand injuries.
Subsequently, while the student received medical treatment for his injuries, the accused individuals reportedly vandalized his residence, causing significant damage. In response, the student’s mother filed a complaint with the Manamadurai SIPCOT police station, leading to the arrest of the three suspects under the Prevention of Atrocities Act.
The accused individuals now face legal repercussions under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Charges include offenses such as Obscene Acts and Songs, Assault or use of criminal force, and Abusing a member of a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe by caste name. Authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
This incident is part of a concerning trend of caste-based violence that continues to plague communities across India. Acts of discrimination and violence against individuals based on their caste or social status remain persistent issues, requiring urgent attention and comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and protection of all individuals, regardless of their background.
As authorities work to hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions, it is essential for society as a whole to address the deep-rooted prejudices and biases that fuel such acts of violence. Only through collective efforts to promote equality, justice, and understanding can we hope to eliminate caste-based discrimination and create a more inclusive and harmonious society for all.
