Cantaloupe Salmonella Outbreak Ended After 400+ Illnesses, 6 Deaths

Atlanta, GA – The recent salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupe has come to an end, according to the Centers for Disease Control, with over 400 reported cases of illness across 44 states. This widespread outbreak resulted in 158 hospitalizations and tragically claimed the lives of six individuals.

Along with affecting numerous individuals in the United States, the tainted cantaloupe was also distributed in Canada, leading to over 160 reported cases in the country. Canadian health authorities reported 61 hospitalizations and seven deaths related to the contaminated fruit.

The specific brands affected by the outbreak were Malchita and Rudy, sold at various retailers such as Kwik Trip, Kroger, and Trader Joe’s from September to December 2023. In response to the outbreak, the Food & Drug Administration has issued a warning for individuals to check their freezer for any cantaloupe products that may be part of the recall.

Experts advise that if there is any uncertainty regarding the origin of the cantaloupe, it is best to dispose of the fruit to prevent any potential health risks. The CDC emphasizes the importance of proper food handling and safety practices to minimize the risk of future outbreaks.

As the investigation into the source of the salmonella outbreak continues, health officials urge the public to remain vigilant and stay informed about food recalls and safety guidelines. By promoting awareness and education about foodborne illnesses, authorities aim to prevent similar incidents and protect public health in the future.
