“Canine Cornell Survives Stabbing Brutality” – Nassau County DA Demands Justice for Animal Abuser

MINEOLA, N.Y. – In Nassau County, District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly discussed the case of Cornell, a canine believed to be a terrier mix about 2 years old, who miraculously survived being stabbed 17 times over a month ago by an unidentified assailant. The news conference was held on Dec. 28 to provide details of the brutal attack and seek justice for the abused animal.

Cornell was brought to the news conference, having made a speedy recovery from his injuries. Donnelly comforted him before she detailed his assault, expressing the urgency to find the perpetrator. The dog was found by a woman on Washport avenue in Freeport on Nov. 27 and was then taken to the Hempstead animal shelter and the Farmingdale veterinary hospital for treatment.

Appealing to the public for information, Donnelly emphasized the seriousness of animal crimes and the potential danger posed by those who commit such acts. Gary Rogers, of the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Corell’s attacker.

The district attorney also mentioned possible charges that Cornell’s attacker could face, including felony aggravated cruelty to animals, given that any of his stab wounds could have been fatal. She urged anyone with information to contact the Nassau County Animal Crimes Hotline.

Ashley Behrens, acting director of the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, stated that Cornell may be a mix containing pit bull, but he is primarily a “75-pound mutt.” She also appealed for a quiet household where Cornell can be safe and comfortable. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Nassau County Animal Crimes Hotline at (516) 571-7755, ext. 8.
