Brutal Attack Prompts Permanent Exclusion of Students from Upper Hutt College

Upper Hutt, New Zealand – A brutal attack at Upper Hutt College has led to the expulsion of two students involved in the incident. Last week, a video surfaced showing two junior students assaulting a senior while others looked on. The police are currently investigating the incident in question.

Following the attack, the two students were initially suspended, and on Wednesday night, the school’s board disciplinary committee made the decision to permanently exclude them. School principal Judith Taylor emphasized that this decision reflects the board’s commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for both students and teachers.

As part of the legal process, the college is now obligated to try and facilitate the enrollment of the excluded students at another school. If unsuccessful, the Ministry of Education will take over the process. In addition to the attackers, the school is also addressing the involvement of students who filmed or encouraged the assault.

In a letter to the school community, Taylor expressed gratitude to the parents and caregivers who offered support to the victim and her family. The victim has since returned to school and is settling in well, surrounded by a caring community.

Taylor also urged parents to have conversations with their children about the responsible sharing of content online and to encourage those experiencing harm at school to speak up. The school has recently implemented an anonymous online reporting system and is actively following up on the initial reports received.

The incident at Upper Hutt College has sparked a broader discussion about the importance of maintaining a safe and inclusive school environment, as well as the role of students in upholding these standards.
