New York, NY – A career criminal with a history of violence has now been charged with the fatal shooting of a close friend of a previous victim’s family, shortly after being released from prison. Deshaun Coleman, 46, is accused of killing 26-year-old Hasan Richburg in a dispute over a girl at a Bronx apartment building, just over a year after his release from state prison.
Coleman had previously dodged a murder charge in 2012 for the killing of Victor Maldonado, a friend of the sister of the latest victim. Despite being charged with murder in Maldonado’s death, Coleman claimed self-defense at his trial and was convicted only of gun possession, serving time until January 2023.
According to police and prosecutors, Coleman shot Richburg multiple times in the Bronx incident and was arrested nearly a week later. He was taken to Bronx Criminal Court, where he was ordered to be held without bail.
The accused, also known as “Boogie,” had a lengthy criminal record prior to the recent shooting. He had been arrested over two dozen times, including charges for attempted murder, assault, drug possession, and robbery.
Richburg was pronounced dead after being shot on West Kingsbridge Avenue in the Bronx, where he collapsed in a nearby restaurant. The victim had ties to Maldonado, who had also died from gunshot wounds in the same area 12 years earlier.
Coleman faces charges of murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. He is scheduled to appear in court in the Bronx on March 14 for further proceedings.
