Bond Reduction Requested by Parents Charged in Connection to Twin Infants’ Death in Houston

Houston, Texas – A couple charged in connection to the tragic death of their twin infants is seeking a reduction in bond, according to court documents. Angelina Belinda Calderon and Fernando Vega, both 21 years old, face charges of injury to a child-serious bodily injury in relation to the deaths of their 5-week-old twins in October 2023.

During a court appearance on Monday, the couple’s attorneys requested lower bond amounts. They are currently being held on $750,000 bond for each case. Calderon’s bond reduction hearing is set for Friday, while Vega’s hearing has been scheduled for late May.

The tragic incident unfolded when Houston Police Department patrol officers responded to a home where the infants, identified as Massail and Mirena Vega, were found unresponsive. The children’s father, Vega, discovered them in their crib, not breathing. Despite attempts to administer CPR over the phone, the premature twins could not be revived.

An autopsy determined that the infants had succumbed to multiple injuries inflicted by a blunt object. Shockingly, it was revealed that the twins had not received necessary medical check-ups since leaving the hospital. Police documents indicated that Calderon disclosed the twins had been unwell, but medical care had not been sought.

Family members expressed disbelief at the tragic news, with Calderon’s sister describing her as a devoted mother. However, allegations of abuse surfaced, with reports indicating Vega’s previous arrest for restraining Calderon unlawfully. Furthermore, it was discovered that Vega was out on bond for a drug-related offense at the time of the infants’ deaths.

Authorities noted that the twins showed signs of malnourishment and injuries that dated back days or even weeks. The couple was taken into custody without incident following a thorough investigation. Despite differing accounts and allegations, investigators are working diligently to uncover the truth behind the heart-wrenching tragedy.
