Blackbuck Deaths on the Rise: Concerns Grow Over Highway Threats to Wildlife in Solapur

Pune, India – The rising number of blackbuck deaths in road accidents in the grassland areas of Solapur has become a major cause for concern for the forest department. Over the past few years, the construction of highways has disrupted the migratory routes of these animals, leading to an increase in fatal incidents. In 2020, six blackbucks lost their lives due to road accidents and poaching. This number decreased during the Covid-19 pandemic, but in 2023, there has been a resurgence in incidents with 15 animals dying in three separate road accidents.

Among the most tragic accidents in 2023 was on January 28, when 13 blackbucks perished along the Solapur-Bijapur highway. These incidents are occurring as highways intersect the blackbuck corridors, impacting their natural grazing areas and migratory paths. Deputy conservator of forests Tushar Chavan highlighted that the blackbucks follow a specific route for water and food, which has now been disrupted by the highway constructions.

The forest department has acknowledged the need for interventions to protect the blackbuck population. To address the issue, they have implemented measures such as the creation of multiple waterholes in their original habitats, increased plantations of grass favored by blackbucks, and the installation of overpasses and underpasses along animal corridors. Additionally, opaque fences have been erected along certain highways to prevent further accidents involving the blackbucks.

In recent years, several migratory routes of these animals have been altered due to highway development, further emphasizing the importance of conservation efforts. The forest department remains committed to finding sustainable solutions to ensure the safety and well-being of the blackbuck population in the face of increasing threats from road accidents and habitat disruption.

It is crucial for authorities to continue monitoring the situation closely and implementing effective strategies to mitigate the risks faced by blackbucks and other wildlife species along highways. By working towards harmonizing infrastructure development with wildlife conservation, it is possible to create a safer environment for both humans and animals sharing the same ecosystems.
