Belmont Cragin Restaurant Robbed at Gunpoint, Armed Patron Intervenes

CHICAGO, Illinois – A 17-year-old boy is now in custody after an attempted robbery at a Mexican restaurant on the Northwest Side of the city. The incident took place in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on Monday night, according to the Chicago Police Department.

The armed teenager entered the restaurant located in the 5400-block of West Belmont Avenue around 9:35 p.m. and demanded money from the cash register. However, a licensed concealed carry holder who was present in the restaurant confronted the teen and fired a shot, but missed. The window of the restaurant displayed visible bullet holes as a result of the altercation.

After exiting the restaurant, the boy attempted to flee the scene in a black SUV, which ultimately crashed in the 2800-block of North Long Avenue. Despite his efforts to escape, the boy was apprehended by authorities. A weapon was recovered by the CPD.

As a result of the incident, Area Five Detectives are currently investigating the attempted robbery. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and vigilance in local neighborhoods, particularly as incidents of crime can occur in unexpected places.
