BALTIMORE, Maryland – A man convicted of the 2021 ambush shooting that resulted in the death of a Baltimore police officer and another victim has been sentenced to life without parole. Elliot Knox, 34, received two life sentences without parole for the deadly shootings that occurred just hours apart in separate areas of Baltimore. The motive behind the killings was never clearly established, but prosecutors were able to present enough evidence to convince jurors of Knox’s guilt during a trial that took place in March. The maximum penalty was handed down to Knox during a hearing on Tuesday morning.
State’s Attorney Ivan Bates emphasized that the sentence sends a clear message that acts of violence, especially those targeting individuals who serve their communities with honor, will not be tolerated. Knox’s attorney did not provide immediate comment following the sentencing.
During the fatal incidents, Baltimore police officer Keona Holley was ambushed and shot to death while sitting in her marked patrol car during an overnight shift. Justin Johnson was also fatally shot while seated in a parked car just hours later. Knox was identified as the owner of a vehicle captured on surveillance footage leaving both crime scenes, leading to his detention. In a statement to detectives, Knox admitted to some involvement but placed the blame on another man, Travon Shaw, who was later convicted as well.
Shaw, who is serving life without parole, was found guilty of murder and other charges in Johnson’s killing. He also pleaded guilty to his role in Holley’s murder. Although there was a close relationship between Shaw and Johnson, no connection was discovered between Knox and either victim. Holley, a dedicated officer who joined the Baltimore Police Department in 2019, was described by her family as a compassionate individual who aspired to make a positive impact on her community.
The sentencing of Knox to life without parole serves as a reminder of the tragic consequences of violence and honors the memory of those lost in the senseless acts.
