Jerusalem, Israel — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned an attack on Knesset member Yoav Ben Tzur during a protest by ultra-Orthodox activists on Saturday evening. Netanyahu characterized the incident as a “violent assault” perpetrated by a small group of dissenters opposing legislative efforts regarding the military conscription of yeshiva students.
Ben Tzur, representing the Shas party, faced the brunt of the protest after he backed a controversial bill aimed at regulating the draft for religious scholars. In the escalating confrontation, protesters surrounded his vehicle in the Bukharim neighborhood, damaged it, and hurled debris in a show of defiance against the proposed legislation. Law enforcement soon intervened to ensure his safety.
Netanyahu emphasized that while disagreements over policy are common, violence is unacceptable. “Law enforcement must take decisive action against any attempt to intimidate or harm public officials,” he stated, underscoring the need for order in political discourse.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid also expressed his dismay, arguing that such aggression contradicts the fundamental values of the Torah and the State of Israel. “Violent offenders must face strict repercussions,” he added, reinforcing the call for accountability.
Former Chief of Staff and Yisrael Party Chairman Gadi Eisenkot condemned the attack, labeling it indicative of a broader issue of governance. “This incident reveals a troubling decline in civic responsibility,” he remarked, advocating for comprehensive reforms that address the separation between certain groups and the state. Eisenkot called for urgent action to tackle draft evasion and promote civic obligations among all citizens.
Yisrael Beiteinu leader Avigdor Lieberman echoed these sentiments, criticizing the failure to enforce uniform legal consequences for all citizens, including those avoiding military service. “We must establish a fair playing field for all, ensuring zero tolerance for lawbreakers, whether they are draft dodgers or members of protection rackets,” he asserted, signaling a commitment to restoring order.
The Shas movement condemned the attack, asserting that it did not represent the values of the Torah or the wider faith community. They described the act of aggression as a desecration, distancing themselves from the violent outburst and emphasizing a collective call for respect and dialogue among differing viewpoints.
