Attack on Haiti’s National Palace Foiled in Second Attempt, Police Injured in Response

Port-au-Prince, Haiti – In a daring attempt, the National Palace in Haiti faced a second violent attack after the previous failed assault by the group known as “Barbecue.” The security units at the Palace, along with the Police, successfully thwarted the attackers’ plans, despite a clash resulting in injuries to at least five police officers, with one in critical condition. Reports indicate that an undisclosed number of assailants were either injured or killed during the confrontation on Monday, April 1st, 2024.

Following their unsuccessful attempt to breach the Palace grounds, armed individuals resorted to surrounding the area and setting fire to an armored vehicle belonging to the Haitian National Police (PNH) near the site. Simultaneously, coordinated attacks were launched in various locations within the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince. Shootings were reported in districts such as Pernier, Champ de Mars, Capois, Lamarre streets, Carrefour Aeroport, Delmas 19, 24, 30, Clercine Nord, Cazeau, Frères, and Vivy Mitchell, creating a state of chaos in the city.

The situation remains tense as security forces continue to be on high alert in the wake of these aggressive incidents. The attacks on the National Palace and the subsequent coordinated assaults in different parts of Port-au-Prince have raised concerns about the stability and safety within the city.
