ALIQUIPPA, Pa. β A significant development has emerged in the case against Brett Ours, the primary suspect in a brutal attack at a local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) hall. Ours, facing charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault, has waived his arraignment, allowing the legal process to proceed without this initial court appearance.
Authorities allege that Ours viciously assaulted Preston Coleman for about 30 minutes inside the VFW on Penn Avenue in January. The incident, which was recorded on video, shows Coleman becoming unconscious and defenseless during the attack, raising serious concerns about the actions of other patrons present at the time.
Reports indicate that Ours utilized a bar stool during the assault, further intensifying the violence of the encounter. Prashana Coleman, the victim’s daughter, expressed her distress over the alleged inaction of the bystanders. βIt pains my family to know that no one tried to stop this attack as it happened,β she said, emphasizing her father’s isolated position as the only Black patron at the bar during the incident.
Coleman sustained severe injuries, including substantial trauma to his head, neck, and face, necessitating his transport to a hospital via helicopter. The gravity of his condition highlights not only the brutality of the attack but also raises questions about community responsibility in such harrowing situations.
Following a month-long investigation, police reported that Ours surrendered peacefully after a brief standoff at a home on Allegheny Avenue in West Aliquippa. This development added a layer of complexity to an already troubling case, as investigators also looked into the roles of three additional individuals who were present during the altercation.
As the community grapples with the fallout from this violent incident, many are calling for greater awareness and action against such behavior. Coleman’s family is seeking justice not only for their loved one but also for accountability in the face of indifference from witnesses.
Ours is scheduled to stand trial later this month, an event that many in the community are anticipating closely as they await answers and justice for Preston Coleman.
