FREMONT, Neb. — A tragic explosion at the Horizon Biofuels plant on Tuesday morning has claimed three lives, as emergency crews continue recovery efforts and authorities investigate the incident. The blast occurred shortly before noon, triggering a fire that complicated rescue operations due to the extensive debris and structural damage.
The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Wednesday that 32-year-old Dylan Danielson of Columbus was among the deceased. His body was recovered around noon the following day by Nebraska Task Force One and local agencies. Additionally, the bodies of two young girls, who were reportedly Danielson’s daughters, were also found. The sheriff’s office has decided to keep their identities confidential to protect the family’s privacy.
Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg shared that Danielson had brought his daughters to the plant on the day of the explosion, ahead of a scheduled doctor’s visit. This personal tragedy has hit the community hard, prompting condolences from local officials and organizations as they rally around the grieving family.
Rescue teams faced significant challenges in their search for the victims, requiring heavy machinery to sift through the wreckage, which was exacerbated by ongoing fire conditions within the building. Horizon Biofuels, which operates under the name Elkhorn Valley Animal Bedding, specializes in manufacturing wood pellets and animal bedding from recycled wood products. The facility employs approximately 10 people and has a production capacity of 20,000 short tons annually, making it one of three commercial pellet plants in Nebraska.
