Attack: Man Sentenced to 12 Years After Violent Train Assault With Broken Bottle

Glasgow, Scotland — A 48-year-old man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for a violent attack on two passengers aboard a train. Thomas Craig’s actions on February 16, 2024, left one victim severely injured and prompted widespread panic among fellow travelers.

Craig, who had been drinking, confronted another passenger seated across the aisle. After exchanging words, he launched an unprovoked attack, hitting the man on the head with a glass bottle. The chaos escalated as Craig chased his first target through the train, striking him multiple times until the bottle broke and he was left with a jagged weapon.

As the first victim sought help, Craig turned his aggression toward a friend who attempted to intervene. The second victim faced a barrage of punches and was then stabbed twice in the chest with the broken bottle. Medical evaluations revealed life-threatening injuries, including a wound close to his heart and a collapsed lung, which required intensive care.

Following the incident, Craig returned to his seat, discarding the weapon by tossing it where the victims had been. He then pocketed one of their phones and changed into a fresh hoodie, leaving behind a gruesome scene. Police apprehended him at Larbert railway station, where emergency responders treated the injured men before transporting them to the hospital.

Detective Inspector Marc Francey, from British Transport Police, condemned Craig’s actions as “truly despicable,” noting the impact his violence had on the passengers and crew. The situation could have ended more tragically, and he emphasized the pivotal role of paramedics in saving lives that day.

Craig was found guilty of attempted murder and assault to the danger of life in November at the High Court in Glasgow. The court’s ruling reflects the severity of his behavior that not only affected the immediate victims but also caused alarm among everyone present during the ordeal. His sentences serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of violent actions, particularly in public settings where safety is compromised.
