CORK, Ireland — A woman narrowly escaped serious injury during a violent encounter in Cork City when she instinctively raised her hand to shield herself from an attacker wielding a broken bottle.
The 39-year-old assailant, Robert Nachtygal, has pleaded guilty to assault with intent to cause bodily harm. His sentencing has been postponed until October 30 at Cork Circuit Criminal Court as authorities assess the case.
According to Garda Kevin Roche, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on October 23 on Lower Oliver Plunkett Street. During a hearing at Cork District Court, Sergeant Dave Delea detailed the confrontation, stating that Nachtygal allegedly pinned the woman, aged 35, against a wall and struck her multiple times in the head and face. The assault only ceased when a passerby intervened.
After initially walking away from the scene, the woman returned only to be caught by her hair and forcefully dragged toward a nearby vehicle. Delea reported that Nachtygal then brandished a broken bottle neck, attempting to stab the woman in the face and neck in a highly aggressive manner. The victim managed to raise her right hand to protect herself, suffering cuts to her hand and wrist as a result.
The severity of the situation escalated, leaving the woman with a significant gash that bled heavily. Surveillance footage captured the incident, providing crucial evidence for the ongoing legal proceedings.
Judge Helen Boyle presided over the case and decided to remand Nachtygal in custody, ensuring he remains detained until the next court date. The community is now left to grapple with the implications of this violent act and the ongoing discussions surrounding public safety.
