Assault by Beating: Pontefract Man Sentenced for Prolonged Attack on Ex-Wife

East Cowes, United Kingdom – Alexander Lock, a 34-year-old man residing in Pontefract, was recently sentenced in IW Crown Court for assault by beating. The incident, described as a “prolonged beating,” occurred at the couple’s former residence on July 1, 2023.

During the court proceedings, Prosecutor James Kellam revealed that Lock, who had sent his wife to purchase vodka after complaining about a broken arm, turned violent upon her return. He reportedly pinned her down on the sofa, squeezed her face, and prevented her from leaving the room. Despite Lock’s denial of attempting to strangle or assault his ex-wife, he was convicted of the offenses.

Following his arrest, Lock spent six weeks in custody before the sentencing. His defense attorney, Anna Leathem, mentioned that the couple had since separated, and Lock was no longer in contact with his ex-wife but expressed a desire to maintain a relationship with their three children. However, due to bail conditions restricting his movements, Lock was unable to see his children.

Addressing Lock’s struggles with isolation and mental health issues, the court highlighted his cooperation with probation services and acknowledgment of the harm caused by his actions. Recorder Barry McElduff gave Lock the option of an additional month in jail or compliance with a community order. Lock chose the latter, expressing a willingness to prove himself and turn over a new leaf.

Considering the circumstances and time already served, Recorder McElduff opted against imposing further jail time on Lock. Instead, Lock was sentenced to an 18-month community order, which includes 40 hours of unpaid work and up to 20 rehabilitation days. This sentence aimed to provide Lock with an opportunity to address his behaviors and make amends for the harm caused to his ex-wife.
