Arson Ruled Cause of Baltimore County House Explosion, 52-Year-Old Man in Custody

Baltimore County, Maryland – Following an intense investigation, authorities in Baltimore County announced that a deadly house explosion on April 20 in Essex has been deemed an act of arson. The owner of the home, a 52-year-old man, was taken into police custody in connection with the incident. The man, who had sustained burn injuries, is believed to have set the fire, according to a spokesperson from the fire department. Officials also stated that the man was discovered near the scene, showing signs of injuries related to the fire.

It was reported that fire crews were unable to enter the home when they responded to the two-alarm fire at 28 Crafton Road around 11 p.m. on April 20. Despite efforts, no victims were located inside the structure. Tragically, a dog is believed to have perished in the blaze. The suspect was apprehended on Monday on charges of first-degree arson, animal cruelty, and other offenses. The property records indicate that the man shared the now-destroyed home with his estranged wife and children.

Court records revealed that the suspect orchestrated a fuel and gas explosion that led to the fire and subsequent destruction of the residence. The house, deeded in his name since 2009, sustained a significant amount of damage, with an estimated loss of $300,000 for the property and $200,000 for its contents, as indicated in a preliminary report obtained through a public records request. The fire report identified the basement as the area of origin, citing a structural component made of sawn wood as the first to ignite from multiple heat sources.

This tragic incident has left a community in shock over the deliberate actions that led to the destruction of a home and the loss of a beloved pet. Authorities continue to investigate the motives behind the arson, seeking justice for the victims and their families affected by the devastating explosion.
