PORTLAND, Maine — A man is facing multiple charges after a reported incident of sexual assault and kidnapping that has drawn the attention of local law enforcement. Matthew W. Sheltra, 30, was taken into custody on Thursday evening following allegations of a violent attack that authorities say involved a person he knew.
Sheltra has been charged with several serious offenses, including first-degree aggravated sexual assault, first-degree kidnapping, and second-degree strangulation. His bail has been set at $500,000, and he is expected to make his first court appearance at the Superior Court in Middletown.
The police investigation began after they received reports of a sexual assault incident that occurred on July 27. The alleged victim sought medical treatment at Middlesex Hospital, indicating the severity of the situation, according to police.
Captain Scott Cunningham indicated that the victim was acquainted with Sheltra, which adds a layer of complexity to the case. During the reported attack, it’s alleged that Sheltra used physical force, including choking, and forced the victim to move against her will.
Following what officials described as an extensive investigation, Officer Donald Scranton apprehended Sheltra around 8:50 p.m. on Thursday. The police emphasized the gravity of the charges, which also include third-degree assault and multiple counts of sexual assault.
Sheltra faces a total of eight charges related to the incident. The nature of these allegations highlights significant concerns regarding community safety and the potential risks posed by individuals who commit such violent acts.
Authorities are committed to thorough investigations in cases of this nature, and they urge anyone with further information to come forward. As legal proceedings move forward, the focus will remain on ensuring justice for the victim and holding the accused accountable.
This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of addressing and preventing violence against individuals, especially within familiar relationships. Community members are encouraged to remain vigilant and proactive in fostering a safe environment for all.
